Episode 18 - Unput Together

Why do some of us give ourselves a hard time for not being perfect? On this week’s episode of Written Closure, I discuss the struggle to accept our flawed selves and read a poem that describes this battle we have with ourselves.

*Disclaimer: In my discussion on being Hispanic (of Dominican descent), I speak about how growing up I was too black to be considered Hispanic (or who most people think of when they think of Hispanics--either those who look more European like Jennifer Lopez or Mexicans who look indigenous). There's nothing wrong with either of them. Hispanics come in different shades, shapes and sizes. My point was to explain that I felt like I didn’t belong in the Hispanic community because I didn’t look like Hispanics who are typically featured in the Spanish media, which are mostly white and in very few cases, indigenous.

Written Closure is a weekly podcast where I, writer and host, Shirley De Leon, discuss topics, such as love, loss, pain, and resilience and read poems on these topics as a form of self-reflection. All poems are written and read by me. Follow me on Instagram at @shiloudeleon. Like, share and subscribe to the podcast. If you love the show, please give it a 5-star review. Thank you for listening!
